HVACTA HVAC Training: Challenges That Build Growth

We push—respectfully—so you grow. Purposeful challenges, strong instructor personalities, and real support turn effort into confidence.

HVAC Challenges — Growth with Respect — HVACTA Commencement (Sanford, FL)

Why does HVACTA challenge students?

Because you learn by doing. The right level of challenge—delivered with love, respect, and a little fun—builds clarity, confidence, and competence.

Transcript — HVAC Training Challenges (Danny)

Yeah. Now, Danny mentioned Christopher. Christopher took the class at the beginning—about three years ago—and he hasn’t left. He’s been such a huge asset.
The thing about Christopher is he’s young. He’s not old like me, and nearly as old as Robert—he looks pretty good for 76. [Music]
All these different personalities—not only in the class, the participants, but with the instructors—that’s what makes it extremely valuable.
I told y’all at the very beginning that we’re going to challenge you, and I think we did—because that’s how you grow. And I want to make sure we did this out of love and respect—and out of fun—because I kind of got a kick out of it and out of y’all’s pain.
But it was through that pain that y’all grew. And again, I’m so proud of every single one of y’all.
So what I typically like to do about now is—Raven?
“Yes, sir.”
Would you like to say a couple of things? You can come up here if you wish. Come on up here. Raven has been with us for a number of years. He is from CareerSource.

About HVACTA Videos — Student Portfolios & Professionalism — HVACTA Commencement (Sanford, FL)

Transcript — About HVACTA Videos (Danny)

Danny: Definitely. One of the things we make sure everybody does is provide a video. It serves a couple of purposes. You can cover an HVAC challenge or use it to show your professionalism and personality.
It’s not only for us here—it’s also for marketing. If a potential employer looks you up and sees a positive video about you, that’s a win compared to whatever else might be online.
It’s always fun. Now, what I’m going to do first is talk a little bit about this individual… Hold on one second—let me turn this off.

HVACTA Hours — Early EPA Practice — HVACTA Commencement (Sanford, FL)

Transcript — HVACTA Hours (Early EPA Practice)

Danny: The beautiful thing is a lot of people—including Ciera—did come. We start classes at 9. Many came at 8, stayed a little late, came early so they could practice for their EPA—practice whatever they felt they needed more confidence in.
It’s the intimacy of having a maximum of 10 that allows us to do that, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
So… anybody else want to say anything? Okay, come on up if you wish.

Guest Remarks — Raven (CareerSource) — HVACTA Commencement (July–Aug 2025, Sanford, FL)

Transcript — Raven (CareerSource), Guest Remarks

Thank you. I wasn’t expecting to say anything, of course—but I should have known.

I’ve been with CareerSource for about three years now, and Second Chance University is at the top of my list. I speak the highest of this university right here—just like Ben said—and I’m sure all of my colleagues and clients that I work with can attest to that as well.

Keep doing great things, Danny. First and foremost, this is an amazing thing that you’re doing for the community—helping everybody advance in their skill set.

Also, to everyone that graduated today: this is just the first step. I know it’s the completion of something, but it’s also the start of something as well. I know all of you are going to be great. I’m very proud of you—and that’s all I have. Truth of the matter.

Instructor Remarks — Andrew — HVACTA Commencement (July–Aug 2025, Sanford, FL)

Transcript — Instructor Andrew

I’m Andrew. I come and go in this class as they’re here. On the first day, there were a couple people where I was like, “Oh, it’s going to be rough”—one specifically. But everybody came out of their shell by the end.

It’s odd what we do here: people come in not knowing each other, and by the end they’re like best friends. They exchange numbers and keep communicating; they never really leave this group. Odd—but pretty awesome.

It’s a tough class. Not a lot of hand-holding—we’re past that at this age. Everybody went from knowing zero to borderline being dangerous—which is scary but good. A lot of progression from everybody; nobody really fell behind. Sometimes we have clusters, but this time it was everybody pushing through and having a euphoric moment by week five—which was fantastic.

Other than that—congratulations, guys. I’m really proud of you. Really, I am. He says, “Be true.”

Instructor Remarks — Robert — HVACTA Commencement (July–Aug 2025, Sanford, FL)

Transcript — Instructor Robert

Everybody. I started to think about what I wanted to say today, and basically the only thing I can say is: you made it. You got to this point. I’ve probably said it a couple of times, but now we—Andrew, Danny, Elaine, Chris, and I—got you to the beach. You can walk along the beach and feel comfortable. But ahead of you is a big, wide-open ocean, and you can find out what’s out there for you.

Hopefully, we’ve set enough knowledge in you—confidence and clarity in yourselves—to know what you want to do and where you want to go with that.

I’ve only been here a year, and it’s been great. This has been a fun project for me—to help other people and move forward with what I want to do with the rest of my life. That’s why I try to share that with you—because it’s been a good thing for me, and interesting.

That’s about all I’ve got to say. Welcome, and you made it—you graduated. You made it through all this. When I watched everybody about the third week it was, “okay, okay, okay.” Then week four and five, everybody started going, “okay, I’m feeling good.” That’s what we need—to get to a point where we feel good.

So, thanks, and congratulations to everyone here. We all made it. Thank you

Transcript — HVACTA General Outline

Danny: It’s an honor and a privilege to have Andrew as part of our team. Ultimately, we wouldn’t be here without Andrew, and y’all wouldn’t be here without Andrew. His ability to teach in the classroom and bring his knowledge—it’s excellent. We have the privilege of letting him do that. That’s a wonderful thing.

Part of what we do here is develop our professionalism. Our own personalities get expressed, and our confidence grows. As Elaine would tell you, we definitely carry and transfer the four C’sclarity, choice, confidence, competence. That’s true in anything we do. When you go out to a job, you have to know what you’re looking at.

Oh, boy—like a plumber… As you can see, whoever took these pictures did us a little disservice—but it’s fun. We develop that confidence in a way nobody else does.

Elaine and I have the privilege of serving on advisory boards for a couple of colleges that deal with HVAC, so we know what they do. That’s why we do what we do—because we don’t want to do what they do. We do it differently.

Andrew’s been in HVAC for 25 years—ever since he was, you know, twelve. We put him to work real early. And Robert, who should be here any moment, is another primary instructor. He’s been in the business for 43 years. They’re not “teachers” by academic standards; they’re real, working pros who make sure everybody here experiences what it’s like in the field.

Elaine and I take the academic side—especially me—making sure you know the theory. But because of Andrew and Robert, you get the competence. As anybody would tell you, I don’t answer questions. Did I ever answer any of y’all’s questions? My philosophy—and Andrew’s and Robert’s—is: you learn by doing. You ask me a question, I’m going to say, “I don’t know—figure it out.” They’ll help. Chris will help. But our goal is to make a little chaos and frustration in your life—because that’s how you grow.

One of the things we do—well, it’s not a hard requirement, but you do it—is videos. We’re going to see videos from just about everybody here—about three minutes long. It’s always fun because it shows personality. (You’re not supposed to burn the building down—you didn’t know that? Must’ve been the heat from the room.)

We do videos so we can learn. When you first come in here, it’s ten separate individuals. Throw Robert and Andrew in the mix and it’s twelve separate individuals. But by the time it’s over, everybody’s cohesive—and that relationship building is something I’m very proud of.

(Robert enters.)
Danny: Robert came in at the perfect time.
Robert: Water.
Danny: There’s water in there—and in here. Distribute the water and then come up here and say a couple of words, as usual.

Robert’s been with us because of his ability to learn and teach what he knows to individuals of different backgrounds and ages. Not because of formal teaching experience—he had none—but because he can transfer decades of field knowledge. That’s high-quality. Robert, come on up.

Introduction — Danny introduces Eric Moreno — HVACTA Commencement (July–Aug 2025, Sanford, FL)

Intro Transcript — Danny introduces Eric Moreno

And did you notice on the video he had his safety glasses and his gloves on? Yep—PPE. Which reminds me: don’t forget, Tuesday and Wednesday we’re going through the OSHA-10 training. Make it if you can; if you can’t, maybe the next time and we’ll go from there.

So—is Eric… Eric’s not in—oh, there. No. Yeah. Okay. I’m looking for—thinking you and Raphael. Too many people with the same last name; it’s ridiculous. No, just kidding. Don’t confuse me.

I know that when Eric first started—very quiet, very, very shy—sat in the back—and he’s blossomed a little bit. Still’s got a ways to go. And I know that he’s already accepted a job—that was from a couple of days ago—so I’m proud of them.

What’s interesting is they learned interview techniques here. They learned a lot in here—how to answer and respond to interviews. The companies, after just a couple of minutes, know the respect that they have earned as a technician and as an individual—as a professional progressing.

So, with that, I do want to take a look and see what Eric has to say. Let’s check out the video.

Rafael: Thank you.
Danny: You’re welcome.
Rafael: So, thank you, Danny. You guys had a lot of fun with everyone here and just learned a lot. I’m really thankful for you guys and what you guys have done. And that’s it.

Spotlight — Cyntonio Johnson — HVACTA Commencement (July–Aug 2025, Sanford, FL)

Intro by Danny and Spotlight Transcript — Cyntonio Johnson

Danny: Some people call him what—what is it? Some people call you Mr. Nomenclature. There’s a story to that—maybe he’ll tell you about it in just a second. It has definitely been a privilege having you here—your personality, all of that’s been great. Come on up here, please. Accept this certificate.

Cyntonio: Oh man, I had a good time. But most definitely, we could have made this class more fun without having Mr. Danny here and Mr. Drew and Mr. Robert—just whole lives. Everybody came together and made one big group. This experience is a good experience, you know, so I’m glad I chose Second Chance University.

I learned a lot, you know. Even though, when I first came to this class, I didn’t know anything about the air conditioning system at all, but I learned so much stuff now. I feel like I can—I mean, you know, my level of expertise…

But it was definitely a great experience, and I’m glad I made it. And all I can say is that we all made it, man.
