Getting you in the know, a mini split system is a ductless heating and cooling solution composed of an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air handlers, offering zoned temperature control, high energy efficiency, and easier installation compared to central HVAC systems.

Several Key Benefits include:

Energy Efficiency: Mini splits use inverter compressor technology, which adjusts power output to match demand, saving energy compared to traditional systems that cycle on/off. They also eliminate energy loss through ductwork.
Zoned Control: Each indoor unit operates independently, allowing for individual temperature control in different rooms or zones, reducing energy consumption by only conditioning occupied areas.
Easy Installation: Since no extensive ductwork is needed, installation is less invasive and requires only a small opening in the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units.
Improved Air Quality: By bypassing ducts, these systems reduce the circulation of allergens, dust, and other debris that can accumulate in duct systems.
Quiet Operation: Indoor units are typically very quiet, with some models operating at sound levels as low as 19 dB.

Interested in HVAC, our learning by doing approach may be the right for you.

If you enjoy daily challenges, working with your hands, and never a dull moment, the HVAC industry may be a good fit for you and HVAC Technical can help you get there quickly, we are talking six weeks.

Recognizing the ability to perform preventive maintenances are a fundamental skill HVAC technicians must excel at, all participants are required to conduct a multitude of PMs on a multitude of systems.

HVACTA: PM Perfection

HVACTA: PM Perfection

HVACTA: PM Perfection

In HVAC, PM stands for Preventive Maintenance (or Planned Preventive Maintenance – PPM), which involves regular, scheduled inspections, tune-ups, and cleaning of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to ensure they run efficiently, prevent costly breakdowns, extend equipment life, and improve indoor air quality, much like an oil change for a car.

For those not sold on the idea of having a recognized HVAC professional perform a PM for you, here’s a few benefits of getting an HVAC PM on a regular basis:

* Lower Energy Bills: Efficient systems use less energy.
* Fewer Breakdowns: Catching small issues early prevents major failures.
* Extended Lifespan: Regular care keeps equipment running longer.
* Better Air Quality: Clean filters and systems improve indoor air.
* Cost Savings: Prevents expensive emergency repairs and downtime.

Today has been brought to you by the letters P and M.

HVAC Technical Academy is about your personal and professional growth… and when it comes to the HVAC industry, we are pretty awesome.

If you enjoy daily challenges, working with your hands, and never a dull moment, the HVAC industry may be a good fit for you and HVAC Technical Academy can help you get there quickly, we are talking six weeks.

HVAC Technical Academy brings participants to an HVAC reality few workshops can offer. Partnering with Tropical Air of Central Florida, hands-on and vicarious experience becomes a reality… daily.

In the middle of the fourth week and three complete system swaps, participants progress their knowledge, skills, and abilities to include diagnostics, troubleshooting, preventive maintenances, recover, and so much more.

HVACTA: A day in the life

HVACTA: A day in the life

Though each HVAC company varies based upon daily needs and if projects are residential or commercial, here’s a quick overview:

Wearing lots of hats, an HVAC technician’s day is dynamic, involving early starts, vehicle prep, and a varied schedule of residential/commercial calls for installation, maintenance, or emergency repairs, blending hands-on mechanical/electrical work in diverse locations like attics, rooftops, and new construction sites, requiring problem-solving and customer interaction to keep systems running efficiently.

The HVAC industry offers a rewarding lifelong career, but it requires work… truth is, being in the HVAC industry can be quite challenging. After all, you will be working in all sorts of conditions, including confined spaces, difficult weather, and working closely with residents. Not trying to scare anyone off, just keeping it real.

Understanding the basic concepts of air flow, building distribution boxes, and running flex is a must know how to do. HVAC Technical Academy insists all participants are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to design, build, and construct supply plenum.

For those uncertain of the importance and role of plenum, this is for you.

Air Traffic Manager: Plenum

For those uncertain of the importance and role of plenum, this is for you.

An HVAC plenum is a central metal or fiberglass chamber/box connected directly to a furnace or air handler that acts as a distribution hub for conditioned air. It manages air pressure and directs heated or cooled air into the ductwork (supply) or collects return air (return), ensuring efficient airflow throughout a building.

There are two primary types: the supply plenum, which distributes air from the system to the home, and the return plenum, which pulls air from the home back into the system.

In a way, supply and return plenum acts as a “traffic manager” for air, ensuring consistent pressure and temperature regulation.

At our workshop facility, we work with duct board (building boxes), including measuring and cutting, as well as the material use such as flex, mastic, tape, hangers, registers, and much more.

If you enjoy daily challenges, working with your hands, and never a dull moment, the HVAC industry may be a good fit for you and HVAC Technical Academy can get you there in under two months.

HVAC Break Down: Pizza and Learning

Taking advantage of Hungry Howie’s Whacky Wednesday, all got their slices and drinks. My favorite flavor is the Hawaiian (gotta have pineapple) while we ordered six other flavors to feed the need.

When it comes to the learning part, here’s a sketch of what we do at HVAC Technical Academy:
* Fundamentals: understanding refrigeration theory and air conditioning systems
* Technical skills: working with hand tools, brazing, gauges, vacuum/recovery, etc.
* Safety and Compliance: keeping the environment and participants safe… in addition to obtaining their Universal 608 Certification, all also go through OSHA 10 General Industry training
* Diagnostics: from complete system swaps, component replacements, diagnostics, troubleshooting, to performing preventive maintenances

We are not just an HVACT workshop, our methods are guided by building lasting relationships, personal growth, and practical knowledge, skills, and abilities while mixing hands-on, theory, and safety upon each step in the path.

Questions, give me a call, make comments, email.

Trong Son Huynh web blog - Default Board

Trong Son Huynh - (Training video Transcript) - Defrost Board

Hi Mrs. Smith, my name is Trong Son Huynh from HVAC Technical Academy. Today, I’d like to talk about the defrost board.

The defrost board is located in the outdoor unit. Its main function is to monitor the temperature of the outdoor coil.

When the temperature sensor on the coil detects that the coil has frozen and ice has formed, the defrost board will switch the reversing valve to cooling mode. This allows hot refrigerant to flow through the outdoor coil to melt the ice.

At the same time, the system temporarily shuts off the outdoor fan so the condenser coil can heat up more quickly. The defrost board also sends a signal to activate the heat strip in the indoor unit to maintain indoor comfort during the defrost cycle.

This cycle continues until the temperature sensor detects that the ice has melted. Once the coil is clear, the system switches back to normal heating mode.

When the defrost board goes bad, the heat pump system may fail to remove ice from the outdoor coil. This can lead to poor heating performance and excessive ice buildup.

Some common causes of defrost board failure include extreme temperature fluctuations and dust buildup. Dust and debris can affect the board and potentially cause electrical issues within the circuit.

That’s an overview of the defrost board and how it operates.
