Low-GWP Refrigerant Safety: A2L (Mildly Flammable) Certification

Training provided by HVAC Technical Academy.
Certification administered through CertificationandSafety.com.

Training for technicians working with low-GWP and A2L refrigerants.

Industry Shift

The HVACR industry is transitioning away from traditional refrigerants. New Low-GWP refrigerants are more environmentally friendly, but introduce new safety requirements.

Many of these new refrigerants are classified as A2L (mildly flammable), requiring updated knowledge and proper handling procedures.

This certification prepares technicians to safely work with these newer refrigerants while staying compliant with current industry standards.

This isn’t optional—it’s the new standard.

What Are Low-GWP Refrigerants

With the passage of the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, HFC refrigerants are being phased down across the HVACR industry. Low Global Warming Potential (Low-GWP) refrigerants are being introduced as replacements.

These refrigerants are designed to:

  • Reduce environmental impact
  • Improve energy efficiency
  • Meet new federal and state regulations

Many of these new refrigerants are classified as A2L, meaning they are mildly flammable and require updated safety practices.

These refrigerants require updated safety practices for proper installation and service.

Core Technician Responsibilities

Technicians working with flammable and mildly flammable refrigerants must be able to

  • Install equipment containing flammable refrigerants
  • Service systems safely and correctly
  • Follow proper safety procedures and best practices
  • Understand refrigerant types and their properties
  • Use proper tools for installation and service

These responsibilities are required for safe and compliant installation and service of A2L refrigerant systems.
