Employment Landscape
Job Outlook
According to the latest from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, great opportunities are present for those in the HVAC field.
Employment for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers is projected to grow 9 percent from 2023 to 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations.
About 42,500 openings for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.

What’s new in HVAC Regulations
The HVAC industry is making several changes in 2025, including a refrigerant change. Here’s the scoop: The EPA has set a GWP limit of 750 or less for air conditioners sold after January 1, 2025. This modified limit means new HVAC systems will use refrigerants with a lower environmental impact than current refrigerants. Looks like R-32 and R-454B will be the main refrigerant replacements for R410A.
Beginning January 1, 2025, certain technologies may no longer use high global warming potential (GWP) hydro-fluorocarbons (HFCs) or HFC blends. Prohibitions apply to the manufacture, distribution, sale, installation, import, and export of products containing restricted HFCs and on the installation of new systems that use restricted HFCs. More information on the sectors and sub sectors, regulatory context, and ongoing rule makings is available on the Technology Transitions Program website.
We will be bringing you the latest refrigerant changes as it comes in, so keep an eye out.
