HVAC Dependability

Dependability is a term often heard in every industry when it comes to hiring and promoting employees. What does dependability mean and why it is so important?

Dependability in the workplace is the quality letting people know you will do what you said you would do, when you said you will do it, and you will do it to the best of your ability, each and every time.

With the above definition it is easy to understand the importance dependability is for all parties concerned. Taking this to the HVAC industry, what role does dependability play in EVERY part of the day?

For one: residents/clients expect HVAC Service Technicians to be on time and to be courteous. Being late infers the technician is not concerned about the resident which will also imply the company does not care about the resident… yes, HVAC Service Technicians are a direct link to company perception and social reviews.

For two: being late to work means others may be holding on until your arrival. Not only does this cost the company added money, it creates scheduling havoc.

Being dependable means being ready for work 5-10 minutes BEFORE your days starts. To be clear, this does not mean running into the office and beating the clock by seconds and then taking ten minutes to get your van prepared (or your coffee or bathroom break).

Dependability IS Habit Forming

HVAC Technical Academy six-week HVAC Program assists students to develop dependability habits. For example:

  • Students are expected to be ready to go ten minutes before classes begin.
  • Students are expected to do their best on every assignment, theory and hands-on.
  • Students are expected to represent themselves and the companies they will work for professionally.

On a personal note, dependability means taking responsibility and ownership on your actions and always doing the right thing… this will make you a valuable part of any organization fortunate to have your partnership.

Give me a call if you have any questions or if you are considering entering the HVAC field.
