HVACTA: Crystals Impression

HVACTA: Crystals Impression

Crystals ImpressionHello, my name is Crystal. I am the scheduling assistant for Tropical Air of Central Florida, I wanted to share some of the things I’ve learned just by watching the students going through the HVAC course for 2nd Chance University.

Outside Supervised Learning & Observations

  • HVAC Technical Academy is super hands on and interactive. They teach basic knowledge about HVAC in preparation for the 608 Universal Certification, but they also get you in on the action by having you doing it on your own, from day one!
  • Lots of attention is spent on the EPA Certification and personal success skills; this is a huge part of each workshop.
  • Participants get in on the action themselves while learning what to do and what not to do. They learn lots of information from knowing the difference of what an Air Handler and Condenser are, to knowing how to properly read gauges and pressure levels, learning how to braze correctly making sure they are no leaks in their copper lines or any imperfections that may cause them to have issues later.
  • I learned the students like the hands-on learning because it gives them a good sense of what they would actually be doing on the job and sometimes in front of a customer. Learning not to be nervous around a customer is a good thing, you don’t want them to feel like they have someone that doesn’t know what they’re doing working on their home.

With a mentor by your side along the way, there is no better place to prepare for the 608 Universal Certification exam and learn (by doing) what it takes to be an HVAC technician. HVAC Technical Academy is in Sanford, Florida, call to learn more at 407-878-0474 or visit our website.

HVAC EPA 608 Certification

Being part of the HVAC industry, minimal requirements are set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency. Passing the EPA exam is the fundamental starting block service technicians must satisfy.

Recognizing HVAC companies will not hire individuals without the EPA card, HVACTA dedicates activities and exercises to prepare you for the written exam. Our partnership with 2nd Chance University makes taking the exam convenient and part of the 6-week HVAC program offered on site in Sanford, Florida.

EPA Scoop:

2nd Chance University is a registered proctor to provide a closed-book exam for technicians covering all material specified in 40 CFR Part 82 Support F. Technicians will be issued a wallet-sized identification card when a passing score of 70 is achieved. Individuals certified will be considered properly certified in accordance with the requirements promulgated under Section 608 Subpart F and Appendix D to Subpart F.

There are four levels defining EPA Types (on this note, as an HVAC service technician, the Universal is where you need to be and where HVACTA prepares you for)

EPA Section 608 is required to work with or purchase regulated refrigerants for stationary equipment and incorporates the following:

  • Type-I: Required for servicing small appliances.
  • Type-II: Required for servicing or disposing of high-pressure appliances, except small appliances and MVACs.
  • Type-III: Required for servicing or disposing of low-pressure appliances.
  • Universal: Earned when a candidate successfully passes all four sections of the exam.

Candidates must pass the Core section along with one or more of the Types to earn a certification. Candidates who are retesting do not need to retake any sections in which they have received a passing score.

As part of your HVACTA program package, initial EPA testing is offered without student cost. If an individual does not achieve 70% or higher and additional exam is required, cost will be student responsibility at current market price.

Give me a call if you have any questions or if you are considering entering the HVAC field.
